What is 5-Axis machining?
When the term 5 axis is used this typically refers to the directional capability of a CNC machine. A CNC machine that can operate using 5 axes can move a part or a tool in 5 different planes (directions) at the same time (simultaneously).
If we take the example of a 3-axis CNC machine the it can move a part or a tool in two directions (X and Y), and the tool itself can move up and down (Z). With a 5-Axis CNC machine the centers can rotate on two more axes (A and B).
Why are 5 axes important?
Having a 5 axis CNC machine can help the cutting tool approach the part from almost any angle, opening up the possibility of machining very intricate shapes.
